Dr. John Kagan attended the University of Alabama on a full scholarship and was the Jimmy Moore Memorial Scholar Athlete Recipient prior to attending medical school at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He completed a surgical internship at the University of Florida and an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He returned to Fort Myers in December of 1980 to begin private practice. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

Dr. Kagan has devoted himself to this community and its residents. In 1981, he became the team physician for the Fort Myers Green Wave and was a United States Swimming Team Physician in 1985-1988. He and his partners have been chosen as the local team physicians for the Minnesota Twins Baseball Team during Spring Training, and for the Miracle Baseball Team throughout the years since the Twins moved Spring Training to Fort Myers. He and his partners have been the Florida Everblades Team Physicians (Hockey) for the last 10 years.

Dr. Kagan is a member of the Lee County Medical Society, Florida Orthopedic Society, Florida Medical Association, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the American Medical Association.

Dr. Kagan has extensive experience in Sports Medicine and Adult Reconstructive Surgery. He is trained in the latest techniques such as minimally invasive hip and knee surgery, computer assisted surgery, hip resurfacing, oxford uni compartmental knee resurfacing, and shoulder humeral head resurfacing. He has had vast experience with arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder and is routinely performing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic stabilization surgery, and arthroscopic ligament reconstruction surgery in addition to standard knee and shoulder arthroscopic techniques.

A tireless worker, Dr. Kagan performs over 1500 surgical cases per year and was honored to be named as a “Best Doctor” in America by a committee started in 1989 by a group of Harvard trained physicians that utilize peer evaluations in the selection process.

Dr. Kagan’s wife, Elizabeth, is an attorney and registered nurse and was formerly the President of The American Medical Association Alliance. They have twin sons Andrew and Christopher, and a daughter Rachel.
